FREEDOMWALK
September 9-15,
A week-long, 105 mile "Journey for Justice" across six southwest Georgia counties
Sponsored by the Prison & Jail Project
Please plan to join the Prison & Jail Project in September as we embark upon our 12th annual "FREEDOMWALK." This year we will walk 105 miles, beginning in Seminole County, Georgia, and traveling through Miller, Early, Clay, Randolph and Stewart Counties.
On Saturday, September 15, the week-long walk will culminate in Lumpkin, Georgia in front of the 1,500-bed for-profit prison that houses undocumented immigrants for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. We will hold a rally at the prison early that afternoon.
Along the way, we will call attention to jailhouse conditions, courthouse oppression, police misconduct and other injustices we witness in this part of the Deep South. We will honor those who have gone before us and those who struggle for justice today in these rural Black Belt communities. We will lift up important events in our region's history. We will celebrate recent tremendous social justice victories that have happened in many of the communities through which we'll be walking.
We will begin the walk on Sunday afternoon, September 9th, at 1 p.m. in Donalsonville (Seminole County), Georgia. Our week's route takes us north from Donalsonville to Colquitt (Miller County), Blakely (Early County), Ft. Gaines (Clay County), Cuthbert (Randolph County) and finally to Lumpkin in Stewart County.
(We will walk between 8 and 18 miles each day, taking frequent breaks. Meals will be served by local churches and community groups along the way. Lodging is being provided for us each night at a retreat center. A support vehicle follows the walk to provide refreshments and space to ride along when anyone feels it's time to stop walking for awhile.)
