Detention Watch Network Organizing and Outreach Coordinator
The Detention Watch Network (DWN) is a national member-led coalition that works locally and in national collaboration to educate the public, media and policy makers about the injustices of the U.S. immigration detention and deportation system and to advocate for humane reform. Position Summary
The DWN Organizing and Outreach Coordinator will supervise the network’s detention conditions campaign, conduct member outreach, supervise the detention mapping and story projects, manage member communications activities, supervise interns and perform special projects as assigned by the network coordinator.
Specific Responsibilities
Organizing for Community Preparedness and Systemic Reform:
* Act as primary supervisor for a planned public education and organizing campaign on detention conditions;
* Conduct outreach and provide coordination for ongoing regional Deportation 101 trainings.
Member Support/Outreach:
* Provide support for member committees/working groups, including preparation for and coordination of monthly conference calls, minutes and follow-up;
* Conduct outreach to members through individual calls and emails, regular member updates, collecting information about members, assessing their needs, and encouraging their involvement;
* Act as primary coordinator for the annual conference in collaboration with DWN staff and DWN members;
* Engage in public education, outreach and ally building activities.
Tools/Materials:
* Manage the Network’s Mapping Project, including working with student groups, interns, volunteers and consultants; facilitating the collection of information from members and elsewhere into the mapping database; and outreach and promotion of map;
* Assist with management of electronic tools including website, list serves, database, DWN member directory;
* Engage in media communications activities, including monthly coordination of member editorial submissions.
Qualifications
• Experience
* Bachelor’s degree and two years plus experience or equivalent working as an organizer within a grassroots network.
• Knowledge
* Experience with immigration, human rights, social justice issues/immigrant communities a plus.
• Skills and Abilities
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Proficient computer skills.
* Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
* Proficiency in English, and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse populations. Proficiency in Spanish a plus.
* Demonstrated community organizing skills.
* Management skills including facilitation of groups, volunteer management, and program coordination.
* Occasional travel required.
